After decades of surfing longboards I’m experimenting with shorter boards. The essential part of being a competent short-boarder is becoming competent in Duck Diving. I’m asking anyone with expertise into any new techniques for Duck Diving. As shortboard design continues to improve, surely new methods to duck dive from those masters of design are there as well.

  • Technigues for my longboard are; turning trurtle or sumbmerging the longboard sideways under the waves

Shortboard: The Art of Duck Diving;

  • Having the right equipment and practicing with that equipment so that it is wired into my brain
  • Goal - to get both myself and my surfboard as far beneath the oncoming waves as possible and to recover quickly when I have passed under the wave, and up and away returning to paddle out

Presently my technique is:

  • Place both hands on the rails out in front of me and push downwards, sinking the nose of my board under the water
  • Keep my arms straight and lift a leg to lean forward getting more of the board under the water
  • Laying out flat on my board while pushing forward and at the same time putting pressure on the back of the surfboard for uplift
  • Then resume paddling out.

Can anyone improve this method mentioned above?
