Paint der Blank?

Hi Guys. Been a minute since I posted anything... or worked on anything woth posting about. Anyway, I got pretty inspired by this old Hobie "Positive Force" transition board that a buddy of mine picked up. Of course the W.A.V.E.Set fin was spent, so I made a newone, subsequently spending some time with the board. Fin worked out beautifully, though I never got to ride the board.

I shaped a similar one with rolled nose and the same "flip" rail line, but incorporated a tri panel through the middle, V out the tail. So far gotta say shit looks sick to me. I want to do some color, but am burned out on swirls, tints with beautiful laps and patches... I was wanting to do a foil shaped panel of color in the center, sort of imitating the outline, like the old Gordon and Smith "Little Gypsy" or the Hobie "Positive Force". It's a cool look that is in keeping with the style of shape (in my mind).

So here's my question: Can I mask this on the blank and brush or spray on tempera paint? It seems like what to do... I am reluctant to try acrylic spray paint because, well, somehow I think I shouldn't. There is remarkably very little information on how to do pre-glass color out there, and I am just going on what I think I've heard others do. The notion of painting a finished (glassed) board after the fact for some reason goes against everything that I know is right, proper and good. I can't explain why. I just know I'll never fuckin do it.

So... Anyone got some idears for me? is my tempera plan sound? Also, if so, is it possible to tape over dry, previously applied tape , and is a pretty clean edge possible on the surface of the foam? Any other insight on how to do what I'm sayin'?

Any and all input is sure appreciated! I know I could just find out for myself, but I particularly like this shape (I haven't done very many!) and I would like to come close to nailing it round one. Thanks again!
