Design help for myself: Long fish, egg, or hybrid?

$

Guys,

Looking for some advice on a next board for an aging (52), decent shape guy (200lb 6'1"), who's not getting out in the water as much (2, 4 times a month), but still have fantasies of being the shortboarder I was 20 years ago :)  NJ beachbreaks with the range of 3' to 5' waves.  30 years surfing history, riding shortboards 80%, but have always had the love for longboards too.

For about 10 years, I been mainly on a retro keel fish, and longboards on occassion.  But, now trying to get back on some of the more grovel type (41 to 42L / 6'2" to 6'5") shortboards and just frustrating myself (feel like bars of soap syndrome).   In my quiver, is the keel fish, 3 shortboards  (6'2" to 6'8") and NR longboards.  My guess, I need to work my way back into the shortboards and even the fish, but needed some advice, since I've really never rode anything in between.

  • Would a design like a Frye style long fish, Christenson, Hall make sense: 6'9" to 7''2".  (love the cruise, sweeping turns of the small keel fish, ability to handle just about any wave NJ can throw)
  • Would a Hanel, Mini Bing Pintail, speed egg be better: 7'0" to 7'6" (don't think I want a mini-lonboard, as I feel like I might have that covered in my reg LB's).  But, maybe to cruisy for me?
  •  I also keep going back to something Maurice is making for himself now, which looks more hybrid  in say 7'0" to 7'4": https://www.mauricecole.com/reddingo
  • Other suggestions; big-guy tri, large grovelor

I also have no idea to size any of those for myself.  Thanks for any advice from all.

Kindly,

Herb B.

Longboard center fin box install 2+1

Hello,

I'm doing one of my first boards, with a 2+1 fin system, and I'm not sure how to put the longboard 10.5 center box on the board.

I was wondering if you can help me with:

- When do I put the center box?

- How do I put it? (My box came with a top edge, which I will sand, and some foam stickers);

I post a picture with the material I have.

I read some topics here, there are several with information that I thought good, but I couldn't reach a conclusion.

Thanks

anybody know what kinda fin boxes these are?

Softop EVA deck foam removal

I’ve got an old lifeguard 11’ Surftech Softop with the glass stripped off most of the bottom. I want to take the EVA foam off the deck and reglass the bottom and do a cork deck. I’m not having much luck with heat and scrapers on the EVA foam and I’m hesitant to use any solvents cause if it its the exposed foam on the bottom it could do some damage. Any tips would be appreciated.

The virtual reality shaping room

At risk of major controversy, I felt I should let you know about this.

We're not far off the virtual reality shaping room.

Here's what I mean, sculpting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ivSPqq7gc

This thing costs $99 and works with a phone:

https://www.ximmerse.com/game

Discussed before:

https://www.swaylocks.com/groups/cad-vs-reality

With no room to shape (I have to rent by the day!) and not much of budget this could be a godsend for me. Of course it's still easier to hand shape at the moment but it seems we're getting closer and closer to this.

I personally find designing on a flat screen really difficult. Much perfer doing it by hand. I don't know if VR would really make it any easier. Looking at that first video it looks like yes, it would. But would it?

Shapelab can actually import models. Perhaps it could import a mesh exported from AKUShaper/BoardCAD/Shape3D? If so then you can, right now, view those Marco blanks in 3D and start shaping them.

There's a VR party venue down the road. The software for this is $15 but it's $15/hr. So, a total of $30 to give it a try. hmm... tempting. AFAIK the controls in Shapelab are aimed at sculpting - not useful for shaping like we do.

What do you think? I think it would be like exporting a mesh file from BoardCAD and then trying to shape it further in something like MeshMixer - not particularly useful as far as I know.

But... it's very interesting.

Dry Weave and Delam around vent for hollow redwood log

Hi All. I built a 10'2" hollow redwood log (7th board for me). I didn't want to put in a vent but I eventually grew paranoid that the board would delam or explode without one so I placed vent in the deck. The board is made from 5/16ths thick redwood strips with a bit of Koa in the tail and fin. I sealed the board with a cheater coat of resin research epoxy, put on a single layer of 6 oz glass, did a fill coat and a gloss coat. I got a bit of a delam around the vent hole and would love some opinions about the best way to repair it. I know that there will be wax over the spot and its fairly minor but I've put lots of work into this one (milled the wood myself etc) so I want it to look good. I tried to inject some resin underneath the glass with a needle (this helped a bit) but I couldn't get to the entire affected area.

Added wax to PU deck lam - What now?

Was on autopilot after an hour of filler coats for ding fixes. Moved on to lam the deck of my new board and added wax. Yay. Realized my mistake the second I finished.

I'm sure it compromises the integrity of the lamination for a number of reasons.

So what should I do, if anything, before the filler coat? I thought about just letting it be, hoping that the filler coat resin would disolve the top layer of wax and let it rise to the surface.

Removable D Fin for a Pig?

I've been planning to shape a pig for more than a year and half, and am finally going to make time to make it.

I want to run a classic D Fin, as would noly be appropriate on a Pig, but would love to use a fin box and make the fin removable for easier travel. I know that D fins are designed to be run all the way back at the tail block. But with most foil plans, the very last few inches of the tail are usually too thin for a 10.5" Fins Unlimited box to be placed all the way back.

Would it work to make a removable D Fin with an offset/forward shifted base?

I'd love to make the fin as well (glassed cedar or figured walnut) and could likely make up a mold for making the removable type base.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thruster Fin Placement

I searched but did not find a definative thread on Thruster Fin Placement.  Seems Swaylocks could use a "Sticky" thread dedicated to Thruster Fin Placement.

Can anyone explain how most top sufboard shapers might determine Thruster Fin Placement?

20 years ago - Cheynes' tow in board

I found this article the other day whilst flicking through some surf magazines from the 90's (1998 to be exact).

Some enthusiastic hyperbole from Cheyne but an interesting read nontheless.

Here I go again, scrap architectural foam board.

Making a rubbish board for "someone else" for the first time. Although im basicly making changes to the shape I would like to try.

Got foam from the same lot as the last one. They need cleaning up and the sides sanded to creat a flat surface to bond.

Found some lovely dress grade western red cedar in a skip bin around the corner from home. A residential build. I had them machined. so i have 4 epic stringers, 3 at 11mm thick and one at 15mm.

Tweaking the design on Shape 3D. Lenthened out to 5'9" from 5'6", thinned out the tail and nose profile (I left the last one a bit thicker to see how the glued foam would hold up), increased the rocker by a smidge nose and tail. Its still pretty flat.

Your thoughts on my Mini-Gun design

I´m about to shape my first mingun and you would to me a great favor, if you chared your thoughts on my design.

What is this board for:
It is for me, intermediate landlocked surfer, 6”4 and 200lbs, 39years young. 25 handshaped boards till now.
Not a good surfer, but I´d say well trained waterman (37 years in the water, freediver, youth lifeguard, stress and rescue diver and so on).
I´ve been comfortable paddling around in deep water waves in the 2xoh region (2oh faces) and enjoyed getting tossed around. Let´s say I´m good at taking the beating. ;-)
As long as the waves are rather “fat” and not overly steep/bowly, I´m usually fine.
But I haven´t got a proper board for the conditions and I´d like to change that.
Next spring I´ll do a trip to France and maybe I´m lucky and waves like Parlementia are running in a proper size but without being to gigantic.
I want to use this board for reefbreakes like Parlementia, but also for Cornish winter waves. As well as winter waves / beachbreakes in France (from Quiberon to Seignosse) and Portugal (Algarve). Sizes from oh – 2oh most likely.
I like to trim and carve bigger arcs, I don´t throw the tail around or do fancy moves.
Getting up, carving one big bottom turn, trim a bit and pull outover the shoulder is enough for me.
I other boards are singlefins, fishes, bonzer eggs, mini logs. All ranging from 5.10-7.2 ft length, rather wide outlines (mostly 21 – 22 inches). I like flat rocker numbers.

General shape:
I drawed this classic semigun outline and hotwired the blank.
7.6 x 20.5/8, widepoint 2.5 inches forward. Thickness will be 3.1/8 – 3.1/4 for paddle power.
The rocker is taken from the US Blanks 78 EA, but scaled down to 5.3/8 nose and 2.1/4 tail.
Finsetup: Single + Sidefins / Widowmaker
Why that dimensions:
I can handle 7.6 in my car. And maybe the feeling is not that far off my 7-7.2 singlefins and bonzerr egg.
I want to ride it often to get used to the board, that means it should start to go in hh / oh.
I don´t need that much rocker, all my other boards are low rockered. I like to get in early.
20.5/8 may sound wide. But with my size and weight I like a little extra width and the waves are not overly steep.
Does this sound reasonable ?

Bottom contours:
I´ve searched the archive for bottom contours and looked up what is done on semiguns from Pyzel (Padillac), Lost (Retro Gun), Rusty, Stretch and so on.
I understand why all kinds of Vee get used on gunny boards and why most stepups are usually more like single to double. (power of the wave, speed of travel, lift, manoeuvrability at speed and so on)
I´m not sure if I should go into full gun bottom contours on that "inbetween" size 7"6.
I got my 6.6-7.0 with single to double for typical headhigh or sucky waves.
I think all the waves that will be ridden with that board will have enough power that I don´t need the lift from concaves/double concaves.
So I think it´s time to try something that sits deeper in the water and handles more speed than all the other boards I have.
There are all kind of Variations of belly/panel Vee/ flat nose with V / reverse V / flat / slight single through the middle and V / spiral Vee / slight double through the tail on those kind of boards in the 7ft -8ft region.
Right now my plan would be to keep it simple and use a slight full length Vee (lets say ¼). Or maybe only reverse Vee (I´m very front footed and often drive boards from the middle).
Maybe add very slight double concaves into the vee through the fins for when I use it in on smaller beachbreak surf ? Any suggestions / opinions ?

Attached images:
- 1. Parlementia from the weekend, that is the maximum size I think I could handle. (maybe that Parlementia picture is already to big for a 7.6 board ?)
- 2. Cornish reef break, taken from this video: https://vimeo.com/96135428.
The waves in this video are the size I like. For the 1-2 biggest ones I´d need a good day, the other 80% is just about the size and power I love. I have a 7.2 bonzer egg that I use in those swells.
- 3. my outline
- 4. rocker 78EA, but scaled down to 5.3/8 nose and 2.1/4 tail, I want to get in early, cover some ground, have good glide. I don´t mind the turns to be drawn out arcs.
- 5. hotwired blank. 2lbs EPS, 4mm Plywood stringer, glassing shedule deck 5+5 and 5oz patch, bottom 4+4. I don´t mind some weight in that board. I want my boards to last a long time.

Thank you for any input or feedback.

70s Jacobs Singlefin Shortboard - Shaped by Widener

I just acquired a beat up Jacobs single fin, swallow tail sting/stinger design. The only signature on the deck is 133 Widener, leading me to believe Widener shaped it which would put it in the mid 70s. I've done a search and found one other post about Widener. I figured I'd ask here for any other info/stories about Widener or Jacobs at that time. Not really interested in value for this one, like I said it's beat, but I'm stoked to fix it up and give it a ride. Pics coming soon.

Hi All,

Can't seem to get my hands on a FCS II Tool-less Longboard fin box.

Seems to be none in Bali and I can't locate them in Japan or find them on-line.

I have a new 8'4" performance minimal just sitting there without a fin box, I'd really like to get one on-line before Christmas, can anyone help.

Thanks in advance.

Tail pach or Football patches - Side fin boxes

$

Hello,

I would like you to give me a hand in the process to laminate the side fin boxes. In my case I will laminate a 7'2 board, I have already installed the side boxes and I'm ready to start laminating the bottom of the board. The bottom will be 6oz and have a mixture of pigments, which if run well will be opaque.

Before installing the boxes I thought to put only football patches whit clear resin, but then I came across the mixture of pigments, and I'm afraid that could give problems. I thought it is good idea a tail patch, but like to hear your opinion before.

What can I do to strengthen the side boxes?

Thanks
