The devil is in the details.

I'm going to document a few of my board building escapades, in enough detail to either bore you to tears or keep you engaged.
First off I love fantastic surfboards, kitesurfing and building things, I break EVERYTHING i own....and that is how this journey began.

This is my 4 year old board. It has been smashed on rocks, ridden into the ground. punted off waves and landed flat from 10 ft airs. ..Sadly it started life with a flaw. while trying to speed up the bottom cure of the board using a 500W halogen lamp I cooked a section of the foam in the center of the board creating a small delamination on the bottom deck. after repeated hard landings the top deck was getting pounded into this bubble and eventually the top deck delaminated. with both decks delaminated the rail cracked and let in some water. open heart surgery was required.

the construction was
12 oz deck 0-90 45/45
1/8 d cell H80
6oz 45/45
0.75lb foam
60z 45/45
1/8 d cell H80
6 oz 0/90

it was 5'11 x 18 and weighed 2900 grams with probox fin boxes installed.
I loved this board.....and I'm not done with it yet.....to be continued....

(I wanted more detail in this post but spent alot of time trying to figure out how to link images)

Expensive Surfboard....

Here is one from our old friend Roy. The below text is simply cut/paste from a website.... not my comment.

The Rampant by Roy Stuart
Price:$1.3 million
Although the Rampant may simply look like an antique with its wooden body and gold-inlaid lion, it might just be the future of surfing. The board’s BLEF (bumpy leading edge foil) is a serrated tail fin, which actually cuts through the water more efficiently. Even with the new technology, the price is still a tad high for us.

How to get a clean cut all the way around the glass

I am sure it comes with practice, but can anyone give a suggestion on tips to help get a very clean cut on the edge of the glass where your lap is? If I could do it like in this video at 2:57 , I dont see why there would ever be a need for a cut lap. Just lay it on and laminate.

My friend scored an epic ride on Tuesday that is getting some attention. Surfline has its "Wave Of The Winter" contest but its all dreamy tropical goodness. Here folks is the wave of the actual winter. Cold Gnarly Blustery and dangerous. Wind chill in the single digits.....water about 40*F.

Carbon fiber deck, why should I do this?

So I just got some 6 ounce carbon fiber cloth given to me by a neighbor who once did race car repairs at a speedway near me. I got like 10 feet of this stuff that looks to be about 4 feet wide. It was a freebie. He's Irish and I'll be seeing him and his equally drunky wife at an Irish pub on St Pat night. In a drunken stupor the other night he told me how much he liked me and gave me this fabric. Don't ask.

I'm thinking about doing a deck in-lay on a board. So either talk me into doing this or talk me down. And if I do this, I suppose I'll need to put a piece of 4 ounce regular fiberglass on top. Any special tricks of the trade that I need to know about with this fabric?

Thanks

Good morning,

A friend of mine has a couple of boards that he's trying to get additional info on, and this is the first. An eighties thruster complete with Track Trop and "rad" graphics, of course. But, the brand/shaper are unknown to me. Any ideas are welcome!

Thanks,

And board number two.

A late sixties Rick BM model mini-gun ('69?). Pretty good condition overall, and a neat looking board. (I still like the lines on these, though I could never ride a mini-gun like this worth a damn...)

Again, any comments or info are welcome. Approximate value? I dropped out of the collectors game a while back and have no idea of current market. Just like to surf an oldie or two when the chance comes along!

Thanks,

What size quad fins to make?

I am building my first board with the wonderful help of sways. Board is a speed egg type shape with slightly pulled nose and tail (rounded pin).

I have been trying to make it for super cheap and the fins plus boxes are suddenly are going to more than the entire board so I am going to make some and glass them on.

Board is going to be a quad and fins made from birch ply with a couple of layers of glass over the top. Board is 6'10 x 22 1/2" x 2 3/4. Plenty of volume as I am 6'5 and 220lbs low rocker and full rails.

This board is meant for use in good very fast waves. Down the line speed and hold is important, turning is not. Trimming and gentle carves are about the height of it.

I'm going to go for more rail fin approach then the mckee setup.

How big should I make the fins? Any other giant quad riders out there? Thank you so much.

Hope your paddys day hangovers are better than mine...

Random Nerdy thought that won't get out of my head

Bring on the cool aid. Stingray will get that.

Water is a polar molecule right?
(this means it has a positive and negative end, based on the extra time electrons spend close to the Oxygen molecule and not the Hydrogen atoms)
The ions in salt water are charged partials right? Positive and negatively charged particles due to an imbalance in electrons and protons.

There are all these things marketed to make boards faster, like nano tune and such.

What about a tiny ultra high frequency alternating current, that can somehow be sent though the lamination of the board.

Be almost like a shark shield, or attractant hahaha.

But if you could make it fluctuate fast enough the water molecules and the ions in the slat water would be both attracted then repulsed from the lamination of the board, therefor making it hydroplane or at least effect the hydro dynamics of the board on a molecular level.

Yes i know its WAY overthinking it.
Yes, im guessing there isn't a resin that is a effective electrical conductor but lets pretend we are 100 years in the future and nano technology means its possible and Trumps head is floating in a brine solution telling a robot how to run the planet.......

Why are my finboxes cracking?

Hello!
I have ordered a few surfboards that I have shaped my self through programs. A factory produces the boards that perform great.
However the fin boxes keep cracking. The box it self is not cracked but the glass on top!
Does anyone know why this keeps happening?

I have other boards professionally made that I can't tell the difference. This one isn't placed more shallow and it still cracks?

Greatful for any tips! Best regards!

Just wanting to know what type of fin this and where it may be from?
I pulled it out of an old single fin I'm repairing and I've never seen one like it before
It was glassed into a hole in the board where there appears to have previously been a finbox
It came out of an Australian board btw.
Cheers

Resin leash loop made of carbon fibre. too brittle?

$

Hey guys,

title pretty much sums it up. I'm about to finish a board and have some carbon roving left. I thought of using this instead of regular glass. Would that work? I understand that carbon is stronger than glass, but not flexible. given that the leash will be putting quite a bit of stress on the loop, my concern would be that carbon would be too brittle maybe? Or maybe mix carbon and glass? but I guess, when carbon breaks, glass will break as well, as they're laminated together,

any insights much appreciated.

What blank for 6'8" singlefin

Looking into making a somewhat classicish singlefin for someone. He wants it around 6'8". That's all the details I've gotten for now, gonna speak with him in more detail later this week. What blank would you guys use? I usually use us blanks. I'm stuck between the 6'10A
and the 7'1EA. Maybe bring the nose rocker down a little bit? I've never made one quite like this so advice is appreciated. Also, what would you do as far as bottom contours? These type of board are generally flat or rolled into vee out the tail right? Thanks in advance
