Major Delam...now what?

I bought a once ridden board off Craigslist. They guy I bought it from had it shaped for him, but it turns out he was way to big for the board and only took it out once and realized it didn't float him. I liked the shape and the price was right...His loss..my gain, right?

Wrong. When i met him to buy it, I checked it out thoroughly. It definitely looked like it had only been ridden once. I took it out on a good day and really liked the board. I put it in a board sock and took it home in the bed of my truck. This weekend, I took it out of the sock and saw immediately that half the deck started to delam. From midway to the nose, solid air pocket.

The guy who shaped it closed up shop or merged with another shaper. He was a small time local guy with a decent reputation but I believe he had a handful of glassers. At any rate, I don't think I have any recourse going to him even if I could track him down. The seller I believe was totally unaware of the issue.

So....is it worth taking to another shaper to strip and re-glass? Or, has the damage been done? Scrap it and chalk it up to a very expensive set of fins?

Thanks

Filtering General Purpose Resin.

I use General Purpose Resin for my boards. The last sanding job I did turned out patchy. Not a consistent finish. With whiter looking patchy spots. Could filtering thecresin help at all. If so how do I do it and what could I use to filter the resin. My wife has got a large kitchen strainer. Would that do ?

Hey guys,
I'm new to sway locks so not sure if I'm doing this right.
I've just recently picked up a 1970s single fin in rough shape, I've not fiberglassed before but I'm determined to fix it myself.
Was just wondering I've found polyester resin in BCF (500ml for $8, the photo is of the 250ml one) a lot cheaper than the resins I've found online not including having to pay for shipping as well, the only thing was that on the description it says for fiberglass matting and I just wanted to make sure that it would work okay on fiberglass cloth (I'm new to this stuff so I'm just trying to get my head around it all) this board is really in quite rough shape so I'm not trying to make it look perfect or anything I just want to be able to get it in the water and surf it without having to keep repairing cracks from bad fiberglassing so would this resin be okay to use or would I be better off buying proper resin from a surf organization?A photo of the resin hopefully is attached...
Thanks heaps, Archie

Who are the Swaylocks forum members in that area ? I'm hoping to visit that area in the fall. First time there was in 1949, as a child. Next time was 1969, getting Surf Systems off the ground. I'd like to do a little fishing this next time around. A visit to Daufuski Island would be nice too. Any info on those areas, will be appreciated.

Chambered surfboard interior

Hi there !
I am planning to shape a chambered surfboard out of spruce wood.
I wonder about the interior and the chambers, what would be the pros and cons of having aligned chambers in contrary to staggered arrangements of the chambers ?

I don't know if I'm clear enough ?

In other words, is it best to align the chambers to have wide gabs along the width of the surfboard or not ?

Many thanks
Greg

Lamination "white spots"

Hi,

Done my first lamination and I' m not happy with the result. It looks so easy on youtube:)
Using Gurit sp-115 epoxy and 166g and 224g/m² Glass filament fabric Silane Plain HP-P220E from hp-textiles.com.

When I laminated the bottom (fiber224g). I was a little low on epoxy so I thought its was the problem. I made 300g more for the deck (fiber166g+224g), but still problem to get the fiber wet. I worked like crazy to get to wet out everywhere . I pulled and pushed down the squeegee to force it down, but still ended up with lots of white spots.

Is it the epoxy or fiber or maybe the akrylic paint on the board it eill not stick to? Or is it just me the rookie

Planers with single blade

Hi guys,
I´m looking to buy a planer in Brazil, where most planers cames with a single blade. Makita´s, Bosch´s... The ones I´m looking for are Makita KP0810C and Bosch GHO 40-82 C.
A single blade planer works fine for surfboard blanks? I will face some problem?
Thanks,
Jair

Performance twin fin set up

Hey guys,
So I've recently shaped a few performance twin fins kinda like the twin by DHD, that shape that most big board brands have done as they are very popular at the moment...
I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for the fin placement on these boards, boards range from 5"5-5"9 . And also what the cant on the fins are? Will be installing future plugs :)
Cheers legends

Glassing Schedule for my next board.

$

Today I shave the blank for my next board - a 5' x 21.5" x 2.5"....maybe 2.75" mini simmons...ish. Not the profile shape of a mini simmons nor a twin fin. An interchangeable quin fin. Multi fins worry me a bit so I'd prefer to be prepared so that if need be I can try all options fin configuration.
Here's what I'm intending re the lay up : 1: I've always preferred general purpose resin, call me crazy, for it's hardness and resilience. It cures to a very light buff translucency making discolourisation over the long period far less noticeable than surfboard resin, therefore making repair work when needed a less noticable blend.
Glassing schedule :
1: Seal the blank - double lam. Firstly using white pigmented general purpose resin, brush painted straight into the shaped blank deck and bottom leaving each side to dry for a full day. Next a 2oz. white pigmented insert to deck and bottom, also leaving each side to dry for at least a full day. That way I'm thinking there's a good chance of keeping the weight down at this initial stage, the sealed core harder , and strong - I believe 2oz. cloth does help at this stage...tried it a few times.
2: A tape lap layer to the deck, obviously from the bottom, also of 2oz white pigmented cloth. Then leave the sealed white glassed blank to dry for a full day. ...Yes, this is taking more time than what is normal, hey no hurry, I figure it's all worth it.
3: I've designed and printed on thin porous glassable tissue paper a full width large format tail theme board art decal which includes my logo decal all on one piece. This is lamed onto the bottom which is now sealed and dry. So I mix up enough clear surfboard resin to lam the whole bottom of the board first. Brush on a very thin layer of the clear surfboard resin . Next, position my large theme decal, then place and cut one layer of 4oz. and finish the bottom lam. Leave that to dry for a full day.
4: Finish the deck lam : Position my deck logo decal and free lap the final layer of 4oz.

Hopefully, a strong resilient sealed core , and by utilising general purpose resin and surfboard resin , I achieve achieve a crisp white finish to accentuate the colour in my large theme decal design. .......... .. least that's what I hope .. ? Have I got all this right because it's down the tubes if I don't.

Vintage Harbour, please help.

Howdy,

Two months ago I purchased a Harbour board at an estate sale in Berkley, CA. The seller told me that his grandpa was a life long surfer and that he was the original owner of this board. I took it out a few times and had a blast but the thing is a heavy beast. Shorter sessions but super easy wave catching machine. I measured it and It's a 9'8" ,22 1/4 width, fin replaced with fin box and the nose is caved in. According to Rich Harbour, "The unique dents are more than likely foam shrinkage from heat. For a while, Walker foam had some problems with their foam formula." I cannot find any specs on the board , no shaper signature , nothing! Underneath the Harbour logo it indicates the model followed by a serial #. It is a Banana model , 2038 . I've already tried and contacted Harbour but never received a reply. I also posted in their Harbour forum. Can someone here please provide me with some insight on this particular board? Year, etc... I would love to get some history behind this beauty. Thank you in advance.

reverse rocker on a 9'4-9'6" nose rider

I got lots of ideas, but the rocker has me a bit baffled, it will be my first Longboard shape.
Dims will be around 22-23 wide and 3 thick single fin log kinda thing.

As in total rocker for nose and tail.
Rocker at maybe 12 inches and 24 from nose and tail.??

Any thoughts or suggestions would be awesome.

I know someone will say buy the 9'10" blank and then turn it around and start shaping, but i just want a guide to work from?

Unity board shaped by Redman

Picked up this board for $30 on Craigslist. It's a 6' Unity shaped by (I believe) Redman. Any and all info is appreciated. I love the airbrush work on the deck. The plan is to fix the dings and ride it. The red bottom is a tint so any advice on what I should do for the dings is appreciated. I'm tempted to reglass the whole bottom with red pigment but then again, I like seeing the dings. More info about Redman below.

If it is shaped by the same Redman, I have found info about him shaping for many brands but nothing about Unity.

"South Bay, CA, transplant Robert "Redman" Manville was a big part of this boom. An immensely respected production shaper for top craftsmen like Weber, Takayama and Stewart, Redman's remarkable work ethic was matched only by his knowledge and contacts, not to mention his stacks of modern templates which past and present WRV shapers still use to this day. With Redman helming a dream team that included shaping partner-in-crime Jim Fuller, glosser-turned-factory manager Patrick Herle and esteemed laminator David Rohde, WRV was soon shipping boards to Hawaii and beyond for big-name chargers who swore by Redman's big-wave guns -- while the Friends of the Porpoise logo was quickly becoming the sticker du jour for the air-boosting, tail-sliding contingent, most notably Noah Snyder, the Outer Banks' first professional surfer. Aside from WRV, Redman routinely moonlighted for Randy Hall's Rodanthe-based Hatteras Glass label, even after he was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Redman was determined to fill his orders while passing down as much insight before he passed in 2004... and perhaps after, as well. Unexplainable phenomenon, including CAD malfunctions to tools flying off shelves to a suspiciously routed tornado, have rattled U.S. Fiberglass' corrugated cages ever since and nearly every employee here insists that Robert Manville's ghost still haunts the factory.

"Redman forgot more about shaping than most guys learn in an entire career," says Jesse Fernandez, a Florida pro surfer/ longboarding savant who moved to the Outer Banks in 1990 to work for WRV as a shaper beside Redman, but settled for a glassing job after getting leapfrogged by VB transplant Tommy Moore. "When he died he had hand-shaped close to 50,000 surfboards. There are only a handful of guys in the world who've done that before getting on machines."

Next: a displacement hull SUP ?

$

Last summer I built my first board, an 11 foot SUP. I got a lot of good advice here and I am pleased with the way it turned out. It looks good, performs well, and it's sturdy. It's a good first board.

I use it in choppy water (the Niagara river) and the chop is a bit of a problem: when I meet waves head-on, the tip of my board digs in and slows me down. It's planing design - a rounded bow.

So I am fantasizing of board #2, a long, lean, displacement hull design. Narrow and pointy up front.

Which brings me to two questions.

1. Where can I find a design or a sketch to use to shape my EPS?

2. I have a 12 foot by 3 foot by 6" block of EPS. I would like this board to be a bit longer, maybe 13 or 14 feet. Can I scab on another piece of foam? What effect would that have on strength? I mean, what portion of strength comes from the EPS vs the laminate? I could probably insert a couple of wooden dowels as stiffeners - like rebar in concrete. Should I do that? Or would another layer of glass around that joint provide all the strength I need?

Thanks.

5 foot boards. Their performance ?

Anyone got any thoughts on how they've experienced the performance of 5' boards a la from mini simmons 4' 10" to anything within the 5' range say 5' to 5'8" ?

Hello there, I am new here

Sealing the shaped blank with Gesso.

$
0
0

I've selected a 6'8" kneeboard blank for my 5' ...or 5'5" next board. This blank is quite thick all over with hardly any thickness variance at the nose and tail. What I'm therefore concerned about will be the likely softness of the deck and bottom at it's final shaped thickness of 2.5" or 2.75". I'm thinking then of sealing the shaped blank with Gesso. Does Gesso dry to a good hard crust . No point if it doesn't. If need be I can, will add a 2oz white pigmented insert to the deck and bottom then a final 4oz tape lap clear layer to the deck, then a 4oz free lap to the bottom. ....Thoughts ?
