7.5 Skil 100 sounds weak

$

Okay so i am new to having a Skil 100 type 4. I totally rebuilt it with new blades bearings belt and brushes. Now that it is put back together it sometimes starts up a bit slow with a strong blue arc and every once in a while it sounds like a very faint pop when i pull the trigger, starts a tad slow then gets up to revolution. Is this common or did I do something wrong. I also put in a locking trigger.

I noticed in the US blanks catalogue that they had this option that I've never seen on the drop down menu on the main part of the site.
When are you guys dropping the last 18"?

Hotcoat Issues

I just glassed my first board and had a bunch of issues with the hotcoat. I used 6 oz s-glass over eps and Resin Research epoxy. The lam looked really good but when I hotcoated the resin separated and wouldn't flow into a bunch of different spots. I had a ton of pinholes when I did the bottom so I mixed up a little extra resin for the top (9oz) thinking it would let it flow out better but the top came out even worse. Anyone know what would cause this? Maybe the lam was too dry? I used 14 oz of resin for the lam and I didn't have too much hitting the floor.

Anyone have any tips for fixing it? I was gonna sand it down and do another hotcoat and hope for the bare spots to fill in.

Help Please. Vintage Japanese surfboard

Hi, I recently found this board on Craigslist and I'm having trouble digging up any information about it. I'm hoping someone here can educate me. The board certainly looks and feels vintage. The person I bought it from told me that he got it from a neighbor who had owned it since the 70's. (Unknown if he was the original owner) There are a few poorly repaired dings with what looks like automotive bondo, but otherwise in good shape. The only marking I can find on it is "Made in Japan" and the "Malibu" logo. Anyway, any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Help -- Pacific Surfboards vintage board, curious about this one.

Hi all. Trying to find any info I can on this board, to see if it would have any interest to collectors, or at least figure out a fair price to ask for it when I put it on Craigslist.

About 10 years ago I looked up the surf shop and was able to find some information about Pacific Surfboards of Huntington Beach. Now, I can find barely anything.

I've been stopped a few times walking with it to the beach by strangers who were interested to buy it, but since my answer was always "no thank you" I never got as far as an amount. (It was the only board I had at the time!)

Any info at all would be much appreciated. Thanks!

epoxy finish and minwax Polycrylic

Hey Quick question for all the epoxy gurus on here...

I made a little twin fin fish and glassed it with Green Room resin. I added dark blue tint... So far I have sanded it down to about 220 grit and it looks ok. you can see the weave on a few spots but not bad. Pobably because of the dark color.

So, I was hoping to wipe on some kind of finish to give it a shne and seal it up. I have some minwax polycrylic water based clear gloss.. Would this be an ok way to finish up the board? If so any hints on application?

I have searched and read through a few previous threads but my question is pretty specific.

Thanks so much for any insight!!!

Any insight on this vintage board?

Hi, thanks in advance,

Stumbled across this on Craigslist, kid selling it had no info except the old man he bought it from said it hadn't been ridden prior - until the kid took it out. About 7'0" and still get original single fin. The yellow is actual yellow, not sunburn. No shaper notes at all just the geometric flower-like logo which I haven't encountered yet. Immediately reminded me of a pair of old "SKI" type boards by Aipa and Dewey Weber I'd seen online a while back. Anyway, any insight would be appreciated!

epoxy sanding/hotcoat questions and thoughts

I have gotten pretty good at getting my resin research hot coats to lay out nice. I can usually start sanding the flats with 120 grit. I have been having some issues with the rails especially right where my tape lines are at the apex of the rail. This is generally the only area of the board i slightly kiss the weave. definitely not going thru the weave but just barely hitting it. do people razor scrape this line similar to doing a poly gloss?

I know the hotcoat is going to be thinnest there due to gravity. But is there anything i can do to help out? maybe i am making to many passes with the brush on the rails? I usually lay out the hotcoat nose to tail, cross stroke twice then final nose to tail. After that i make a few extra passes along the rail to help drips.

Is double hotcoating the rails a crazy idea?
just would like to be able to not kiss the weave in these areas, and make it easier for me to sand out. the rails take me forever by hand trying to be careful not to hit the cloth.

also have heard quik kik is nice for hot coats as it is much thicker? i have never used it

thoughts questions concerns??

Moving to Hawaii

Ahoy Swaylockians,

I am a 26 year old teacher and am considering moving to Hawaii to teach. I am from CT and have every intention of living in New England for the majority of my adult life but I want to experience and learn about a culture/place that is different from where I am from. I do not want to experience Hawaii as a mere tourist for a week or two. I want to immerse myself in a new place (for at least 2 years) and see what Hawaii is all about. I am extremely interested in history (I am a history teacher) and surfing history too! I have never been to Hawaii so i was wondering if any of my fellow Swaylockians, especially those who live or have lived in Hawaii, could give me any tips about where would be a good place for a guy like me to live? Any suggestions for places to consider living, teaching, and learning? I am not much of a city guy so I would prefer to be in a town or small city and I would like to be close to some good surf spots! I am an average surfer so definitely won't be paddling out at any crazy spots when its really big. I definitely want to be in a place that I can experience true Hawaiian culture and especially Hawaiian food haha! I also am interested in continuing to shape and glass boards so if there are any connections that I could make in that department that would be amazing! Any ideas/suggestions would be great and I appreciate all of your insights and input!

Thanks again,
Owen

All over the 'net they've broken the links to posted pics even from years ago and are now asking for money to upgrade. Seems more like a hostage demand for money.

Now that's how you build good customer relations !!

I gave in to their demands and upgraded to Flickr for free.

My lifelong pal Mr. Style who works for the city of San Clemente stopped by yesterday and went on and on about how impressed he was by a new endeavor here in SC.

A young fella has opened a surf themed hostel at the south end of town.
Sponsored rooms, bikes with surf racks and even some boards to ride.

I have no affiliation just thought it might be of interest.

non surfer newbee

Hey everybody,

I'm a newbee, sorry yeah one of those again ;) anyway i'll quickly introduce myself.
I'm matthieu, i'm dutch but live in belgium. i'm 43 and am a medschool student (in his exam period so actually i shouldn't even be here)
also i'm a goldmisth and a BsC in physics.

in my spare time i'm well i builder.. i like to make stuff. but specifically stuff i won't be able to afford but which i can build.
and one of my long time wishes is to do some surfing.. which i have never done (well, never.. i actually tried twice on holiday's and wasn't even to bad).

but i'm a compleet and utter nitwit on the topic. but i am handy.. and got interested in building my own surfboard and yesterday i bench watched the youtube thread from Andrew W on youtube on how to build a board from scratch, and well i think that should fit very well inside my skill set..

Oke at the moment i don't have the time and place.. but the future will hopefull bring that what ain't there right now.
and as with everything that needs to be done good.. one needs to be well prepared.

So a good starting question for me would be is.. What kind of board should i build. there are Soooooooo many shapes and sizes.
and then not even to talk about materials. anyway what would be something good to start with.. but not to big (not looking for a stand up peddle board.
So what should i look for in length, width, shape, curvings.. (thickness), basically the real question is where should i start as surfer. (no surf shop near me.. at all)

anyway.. i won't be here very often. but will always respond, is it not with some major or minor delays.

Kind regards and hoop to discuss soon.

Matt.

ps: something that might be of importance.. 1,92m 85kg

Usblanks VS Arctic VS Millennium

I know its been discussed in the archives a lot in the past but I really need to here few more updated reviews about those blanks,
so till now ive only managed to put my hands on Usblanks and Arctic and ive noticed that arctic is a little bit more suited for handshaping the usblanks but nothing major about that one.
ive also noticed that the arctics are much more softer than usblanks and get way more heel dents than the us(arctic green density and usblanks blue density) and this one is big deal for since lot of my boards are used for kiting.
im wondering if you had the same experience as me and I will also like to hear from the guys that used those brands and how is Millennium compared to them, softer/stronger/whiter and what else..

Epoxy ding repair question

Hey guys, I recently picked up a used FireWire board off craigslist for cheap. The board isn't in very good shape, I figured I would do some quick and easy repairs with suncure and maybe give it to a friend. While stripping the deck of wax I came across a fin gash. It's been repaired before but it looks like the repair has separated and needs re-doing. Definitely something more in depth than suncure fiberfill is able to do. So here's my question. Could I use UV curing polyester resin to do this? The board has a wooden deck. In doing the repair, essentially no foam would be exposed to resin. I may be wrong, but my understanding with epoxy boards is polyester resin will melt the foam if it comes in contact with it. So with this being a repair on top of a wooden deck, with basically no contact with foam, it seems like it would be OK. Is this an incorrect assumption? Will the polyester resin bond to the epoxy resin? Ideally I don't want to buy epoxy resin for this beater board if I don't have to. Thanks for the help and wisdom.

This for members new to the craft. What are the techniques, and tools, that you use? Tips for the novice. Greg Tate uses a flexible sanding device, that works well. I use block planes, sureform, and hard sanding blocks. And lots of eyeballing. What tips, and help, can you pass along to newbies, that will make the process less daunting?

Pressure Dings/Small dents and Restorations

$

I'm working on a restoration and the plan is to ride the board once I'm finished. I'm sanding down the bottom and will be glassing a layer of 4oz to make it water tight. Of course all of the dings will be fixed before the glass goes on but I also have a few pressure dings that haven't crushed any glass, they are simply small dents in the glass. Every board in the world has these and I usually don't worry about them on my boards but since I'm going through the work of reglassing the entire bottom, I figured it would be nice to have a perfectly smooth bottom. If there's no good solution, that's fine, I'll leave them be and ride the thing anyway. But, is there a way to fix/fill these up? Thanks in advance.
